Picture a future where man is being overrun by the walking undead. Imagine that every day is a struggle to find food for survival alone. Now imagine that you are a foodie.
Lauren Wilson takes a tongue in cheek approach to our impending and inevitable zombie apocalypse in the satyrical yet very informative “The Art of Eating Through the Zombie Apocalypse.” This is a book that I received from my uncle as a gift. Now, lets get this straight, gifts from Uncle Bob are unique to say the least. I didn’t have high hopes for this one when I picked it up. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Although I don’t believe I would ever consider this book as a survival or culinary bible, it is very practical and does cover some gastronomy basics.
Although keeping it “Light” with the zombie theme, Lauren goes into some basics of foraging, homesteading, and culinary arts. while quickly flipping through the pages the first time I was amused to find recipes such as Twinkie Trifle and Who’s Got Your Back Tuna Mac. But upon further investigation I found that there were sections with MacGyver-esque engineering, hunting and fishing basics, and even food preservation methods. Through the use of the whimsical nature of this book it turns what many times could be a boring or uninteresting read into an oddly interesting and entertain page turner.
If you find your interests may lie in the realm of self-reliance and or homesteading, I would say that this would be a great book to further pique your interest and inspire further questions. But, remember that first and foremost, if the day comes soon… You will not only survive, but also be feasting with the best of them.
